The first electric telegraphs were made around 1837. (The first email was sent in 1971, 134 years later!) Telegraphs work by sending electrical signals over wires, from one telegraph machine to another. The signals are usually short tones (dots) and long tones (dashes). These different tones are a special coded alphabet called Morse code!
Telegraphs totally changed how people communicated! Before, messages had to be sent by mail and could take days or weeks to arrive. Telegraphs worked in only a few seconds!
Because telegraphs were in code, they were often short and to the point, but people had fun with telegrams too! There have been birthday telegrams, holiday telegrams, and even candy-grams, which were delivered with a sweet snack! In 1933, there was the first ever singing telegram. Imagine a person coming to your door and singing you a message from a friend!

Today we went to MOTAT for a school trip. We went to MOTAT because all the year 5 classes are looking at different ways to communicate. The first thing we did was put our bags in a cage then went with the tour lady to a classroom. In the classroom she showed us all the different ways we can communicate with each other. The first thing she showed was the camera. The camera can communicate to other people because the pictures represent something or someone. She showed us what camera's looked like in the olden days and how they have improved over the years. The camera's we have now are completely different to the ones used in the olden days.
Next we went on the Melbourne tram across MOTAT. The Melbourne tram is different to the New Zealand tram because it is much bigger and goes a lot faster. The Melbourne tram took us all around MOTAT and we even passed the zoo! Next we went into the challenge room. My favourite part was ball of electricity. I liked because I electrocuted lots of people. In the challenge room there was a platform that span around. You spin yourself and then stand on one leg while spinning. This means you will have a lot more balance when you spin on one foot by yourself.
After that we went on the voyager. The voyager is a room that shakes while you watch something on the screen. It was really creepy when we were watching the roller coaster movie because it felt like you were going to fall out the cart. We also watched another movie which was when we dug a hole and ended up in CHINA!!!! Inside the room was very cold. The four smallest people in our class got to sit in the middle so no ones head would cover the projector.
Then we went on the kiwi trail round MOTAT. We got given a book with heaps of places and and maps for the places. My favourite part was the Victorian Village because we could try walk on stilts and there were little cottages that you got to go in and see how families lived in the olden days. I also liked the olden day classroom. Did you know that teachers in the olden days were allowed to hit children with leather whips! OUCH!!!!!! In the classroom the teacher writes in chalk and all the children had to sit at desks and had NO mat! Also the children had to write with a feather and a pot of ink.
After the kiwi trail we all packed up and left MOTAT.

How did people communicate around the world in the past?
When my mum was a kid there were no Mobile Phones, Emails, Laptops or Skype. The only way to communicate with people around the world back then was to either call (which cost heaps back then) or write a letter, postcard or telegram. This made her childhood different to ours. She sent messages to people all over world differently. My mum enjoyed writing letters to friends and family all over the world because she always looked forward to hearing back from them. My mum got her first cell phone in her late 20's, and is always telling me I'm not allowed to get a phone until I leave primary school. This is because she survived her childhood without a phone so she thinks we could as well.
How do we communicate with people around the world now?
These days we can communicate with people all over world at anytime night or day in lots of different ways e.g. Skype, Emails, Mobile Phones, Facebook etc. which makes life so much easier for us with all of this new technology. I chose to communicate with people using email.

At school every year 5 class is learning about natural products. In room 26 we are focusing on bacteria. GROSS! We are going to make an natural cleaning product to kill bacteria. HOORAY! We have split up into different groups to find out different information. My group is finding out what unnatural products can do to your health and how natural products are way better for the environment. We are going well so far. We have also found out that most unnatural cleaning products contain OIL!!! When we make our cleaning products I will make sure that we do not use oil! That's all I learnt today but I will update tomorrow.
Tuesday
Today we have chosen a unnatural product (Dettol) and we are finding out all the ingredients in the dettol product, listing then down, then finding out what they do to help us and what effects they can cause. We realized that a ingredient called Chloroxylenol can kill heaps of germs but it can also give you a mild skin irritation or for some people an allergic reaction. Mr Jackson (teacher) was talking about fungi, bacteria and viruses. Did you know that viruses sneak in your body without you noticing and try to multiply then attack your blood cells! Luckily we have our white blood cells that fight all of the viruses of. HOORAY! That's all I have learnt today but I will update tomorrow.
Wednesday
Today our research didn't go according to plan because our research failed so we have changed our investigation to... What is the benefit of buying natural products instead of unnatural products? Well for example: If you were washing your car out on the lawn and you were using a natural product if it spilled onto the grass if would do nothing, but if you were using a unnatural and it spilled on the grass it would soak into the soil and kill all the grass. The same thing would happen if you spilt unnatural product into a stream, lake, river etc. it would kill heaps of fish in the water. What did the poor little fish do to you!! That's all I have learn today but I will update tomorrow.
Thursday
Today our group focused on gathering heaps and heaps of information about the benefits of natural products. We found a really cool website called www.Naturalproducts:thebenefits.com it is a really interesting website so if you like you can cheek it out. We wrote down all the information and wrote a draft of everything bit of information we have found out. Tomorrow we will hopefully start to write a describe map of all the relevant thing and not relevant things.

My moment in time is when my family and friends went skiing on Mount Ruapehu. Tuesday was just amazing because the snow was beautiful and there were not many people up the mountain because it was snowing the previous day. We made a snowman and had a awesome snowball fight. The roads were very icy up the mountain and one car almost slid of the road! Half way up the mountain the car started to move backwards and it was really scary. My favourite bit was when we went on the express chair which has heated seats and a foot rest, we went up to the highest chairlift point on the mountain. The vertigo was the best slope to ski down but the snowbird was close second. Going down the vertigo was so much fun because it was wide and not very icy. I also met Holly on the mountain and skied with her for a day.

My mask is going really well and I have almost finished it. Everyones masks look awesome so our assembly will be great fun! In our assembly we will be dancing with our masks on to try to tell a story that the audience can understand.

My story is a legend from France hope you enjoy it!!!
Once there was a very small duck with a very loud quack. So they called him Quackling. Now, Quackling was clever and he worked hard, so he saved up a good deal of money. In fact, he saved up so much that the King himself came to borrow some. Quackling was proud to loan his money to the King. But a year went by, then two, then three, and the King never paid him back. “I’ve waited long enough,” said Quackling. So he took a sack for the money, and he started for the castle, calling, “Quack! Quack! Quack! I want my money back!”Before long, he came upon a ladder leaning against a wall.“Where are you going, Quackling?” said Ladder.“To the King for my money,” said Quackling. “To the King!” said Ladder. “How wonderful! Will you take me with you?” “Why not?” said Quackling. “No one can ever have too many friends.” And he called out,“Quack! Quack! Quack! Ladder into sack!”Quick as you can blink, Ladder was in the sack. Then Quackling walked on, calling,“Quack! Quack! Quack! I want my money back!”Not much later, he came upon a river flowing through a wood.“Where are you going, Quackling?” said River.“To the King for my money,” said Quackling.“To the King!” said River. “How splendid! Will you take me with you?”“Why not?” said Quackling. “One can never have too many friends.” And he called out “Quack! Quack! Quack! River into sack!” Quick as you can wink, River was in the sack. Then Quackling walked on, calling,“Quack! Quack! Quack! I want my money back!” In a little while, he came upon a beehive hanging from a tree. “Where are you going, Quackling?” said Beehive.“To the King for my money,” said Quackling.“To the King!” said Beehive. “How marvelous! Will you take me with you?”Now, Quackling’s sack was getting full, but he thought there might be just enough room.“Why not?” said Quackling. “One can never have too many friends.” And he called out,“Quack! Quack! Quack! Beehive into sack!” Quick as you can think, Beehive was in the sack. Then Quackling walked on, calling,“Quack! Quack! Quack! I want my money back!”Soon after, Quackling arrived at the King’s castle. He marched right up to the guards and told them, “I’ve come for my money!”The guards went inside and told the prime minister. The prime minister told the King.“Who does that Quackling think he is?” said the King. “Never mind. Just put him in the pit!” So they put Quackling in the pit and left him there.“Help!” cried Quackling. “I’ll never get out!” Then he remembered Ladder. So he called out,“Quack! Quack! Quack! Ladder out of sack!”Quick as you can blink, Ladder was out of the sack. Ladder leaned against the side of the pit, and Quackling climbed out. Then Quackling stood there, calling,“Quack! Quack! Quack!I want my money back!” “How did that Quackling get out of the pit?” said the King. “Never mind. Just put him in the pot!” So they put Quackling in the pot and set it on the fire. “Help!” cried Quackling. “I’m in a stew!” Then he remembered River. So he called out,“Quack! Quack! Quack! River out of sack!” Quick as you can wink, River was out of the sack. River put out the fire and flowed away. Then Quackling got out, calling, “Quack! Quack! Quack! I want my money back!”“How did that Quackling get out of the pot?” said the King. “Never mind. Just bring him here, and I’ll put him in his place—for good!” So they brought Quackling to the King. The King tried to grab him. “Help!” cried Quackling. “This is the end!” Then he remembered Beehive. So he called out, “Quack! Quack! Quack! Beehive out of sack!”Quick as you can think, Beehive was out of the sack. The bees rushed from the hive and started to sting the King. “Help!” cried the King. He fled from the castle, and the bees followed. They chased him all the way to— Well, no one knows where, for they never saw him again.“Hooray!” cried the people of the castle, and the prime minister said, “We never liked that King anyway.” So they put Quackling on the throne and gave him a crown. “Will you be our King?” said the guards. “Why not?” said Quackling. “One can never have too many friends.”

After we practiced it a couple of times we got up on the stage and performed it to the whole class. It was kind of embarrassing at the start but then you got used to it. We also learnt how to use different levels to pose in like high medium and low. Most people used the high level then sometimes people would medium or low but not very often. I like dance because I can do so much creative things when posing and they look sooooo cool!!!!!!

In room 26 this week we have be learning how to write poems. It was really interesting to see all the different vocabulary that everyone used. There were two poems that I really liked writing because it allowed me to use different descriptive words in every sentence. We also wrote some limericks. For those of you who don't know what a limerick poem is I will explain... Well a limerick poem has five lines altogether. The 1st 2nd and 5th lines rhyme and the 3rd and the 4th lines rhyme. My poem is a little bit funny but it is meant to be like that. If you are interested to read some poems here are some that I have wrote!!!!!
Limerick!
There was once a young lady from france,
who had a strong passion for dance,
she danced with her mates,
and even on dates,
and sometimes she danced with Lance!
So that's my limerick hope you liked it!!
This is a poem about 5 senses.

Garden to Table is a very fun activity that all the years 4's and 5's do once every three weeks. For those of you who don't know what you do in garden to table I am going to explain.......Well it is when half the class goes and does gardening and the rest stay in the kitchen and cook delicious meals. The gardeners go and collect all the carrots, tomatoes and other herbs etc, and then these are used by the cooks in the kitchen to help produce delicious meals for us to taste. Now you know what we do at garden to table I am going to write a reflection on what we did recently at garden to table.
On thursday room 26 had garden to table. Everyone likes garden to table. Today my group is in the kitchen. HORRAY!!!! I love cooking. Today we had a list of all the ingredients we needed to have for todays meal.

At school room 26 learnt all about how to paint ocean like backgrounds because we are going to be painting endangered sea animals.
You will need:
White cardboard
Paint brush of any size
Paint
Cup of water
Newspaper to put on the table
Whale Sharks, Turtles, Great White Sharks, Dolphins.
We learnt 3 different techniques. Wet on wet, dry on dry and wet on dry. Wet on wet is when you get a piece of white cardboard and wet the page completely. Then you wet your brush again pick a colour and start painting. Dry on dry is when you wet your brush just a little bit and start painting. For me this technique didn't turn out to well. The last technique we learnt was wet on dry. Wet on dry is kind of like wet on wet but you don't wet the whole page first. I like this technique better then dry on dry, but over all I like wet on wet which we are going to use to paint our backrounds.

Orakei Marae
"E.O.T.C Week this week!!" I shouted to my friends as soon as I arrived at school. We went to the Orakei Marae on Monday and it was so cool. We learnt all about the marae culture. We also learnt the the person that stands on One Tree Hill rules the rest of Auckland. Then after learning about all the marae history the boys and girls split up into groups and went and learnt marae dances. The girls learnt a poi dance and the boys learnt the huka. Then we performed it to each other. It was great fun till it came to an end and we went on the bus back to school.
Tree adventures
Today was Tuesday and on Tuesday we were going to tree adventures. I was so exited, I have been to tree adventures before and it was awesome! As soon as we got there I jumped out of the bus and got my harness and helmet on. The first course I did was the practice course so I had an idea of what it was going to be like up in the trees. Once I passed the practice course we could go do any other course we liked as long as a parent was with us when we did it. I did every course at least once before we left. Myfavore was course 4. I had a awesome time and if you ever go to tree adventures it will be great fun!!!
Orienteering
Orienteering is hard work. I mean it gets very tiring, but it is also very fun. If you like exploring you will love this. What you do is each group has a map and a sheet with numbers on it. You go round looking for numbers and then clipping your sheet. I recommend you bring at least 2 water bottles and sneakers. The first group to get back to the start wins(by the way there is NO prize if you come first!. After that we all packed up and had a big game of go home stay home. It was so worth coming to.
Wave pools
The wave pools are so fun because every 10 minutes they would make big wave come!!! One of myfavoritee things was the hydro slide. For people who don't know what a hydro slide is I will explain what....It is a BIG twirling slide with light and dark parts in the middle of it. But there is more to the wave pools then the waves and the hydro slide there is also a bombing area when you are quite a distance away from the pool and you just do a MASSIVE bomb. That was my secondfavore part. It was sure fun there andt I would go there any other time with my family.

5 senses
I like the taste of chocolate
melting under my tongue.
I like the smell of roses
blooming in the air.
I like the feel of a fluffy kitten
rubbing against my face
I like the sound of paper
burning in a fire place.
I like the look of fireworks
exploding in mid-air.
What's in the Box?
Is it ...
A shinny snake feasting on human flesh?
A colorful crab crawling?
A golden goat galloping?
A jumping Jaguar growling?
An ogre like beast picking his nose?
A kung-fu fighting Koala?
We don't know
Lets look!
